Résumé

Progress in femtosecond laser technology has spawned a rapidly emerging area of investigation covering diverse research and development sectors such as novel laser source development, complex understandings of propagation physics, easily accessible higher order nonlinear physics, advanced material processing, or manipulation of biomolecules and nanoparticles. The applications vary from basic science to innovative manufacturing technologies. While the versatility of ultrafast lasers has shown promise in a variety of disciplines, there still remain many application specific hurdles to overcome. The present volume focuses on examination of near-term civil and defence related applications of femtosecond lasers including micro and nanomachining, secondary source development for nondestructive evaluation, ordering of novel biomimetic sensors for chem-bio detection, and progress towards longer term applications such as potential uses in microfabrication, optical communication and remote sensing. Emphasis is put on various aspects related to controlling the interaction of ultrafast radiation with matter with the purpose to enlarge the applicability area towards novel manufacturing, manipulation, and sensing technologies. This proceedings of the “Femtosecond Phenomena and Nonlinear Optics” symposium intends to describe progress towards the realization of these and other related applications, with an aim towards identifying and discussing the technological challenges that need to be addressed.
