Jeux de genre(s) dans la danse contemporaine

Abstract : Gender has become a fashionable theme for a part of the contemporary dance world. This phenomenon is accompanied by a proliferation of discourses and postmodern theoretical references. The work is characterized by the repeated exposure, in what is intended to be a playful way, of gender stereotypes, in particular of femininity, often caricatured through cross-dressing. However, the theme is neither addressed, nor analyzed, through relationships between the sexes, nor worked on through the body and its motivity. There is a deep disconnection between discourses proclaiming a subversive radicalism and work focused on signs and appearances which maintains, and indeed reinforces, asymmetries between the sexes and the genders. This asymmetry always accords primacy to the male sex and is really a revival of gender hierarchies.
