Abstract : The imaginary transmitted through dance in "Western" culture is based in large part on a feminine symbolic structure that imposes itself because it is perceived as natural. The categorization of dance as feminine is not a universal given, but a true cultural phenomenon, the basis for which can be found in the very processes of gender categorization. This study discusses the instauration of two fundamental aspects as they apply to the case of dance: the process of organization into a hierarchy that places the under estimated values from dualist systems in the feminine pole, and the process of universalization that makes the masculine the pole of reference, relegating any forms of otherness to the feminine.
